When C3PO is first seen by the Ewoks, they recognize his shape and color as their god. We, the audience imagine that the Ewoks are like us, or our ancestors. Our ancestors imagined as gods beings that to modern eyes, seem more like spacemen from an advanced civilization.
When we see the Ewoks bask in the glory of their deity, we don't question why their god is something so commonplace to the protagonists. We deny the obvious truth that the Ewoks based their religion around an old story about a protocol droid that was once amoung them.
But why hasn't there been an expanded universe story about an ancient protocol droid lost on The Forest Moon Of Endor? (Or, The Forest Moon of The Planet Endor). I think it's because we see in the Ewoks a truth about our gods, that they were (like C3PO) commonplace beings in a world we can't imagine yet.
